Fitness Studios Across Maryland See Surge in Small Group Training

Boutique fitness studios across Maryland are reporting strong growth in small group training formats, which studio owners describe as an appealing middle ground between the anonymity of large gyms and the higher cost of one-on-one personal training.

Classes typically capped between six and twelve participants have become the format of choice for a growing number of studios opening across suburban Maryland in the past two years. Owners say the smaller class size allows instructors to give meaningful individual attention and form corrections while still keeping per-session pricing more accessible than private training.

"Clients get to know their instructor and their classmates. There's accountability built in that you just don't get at a big box gym," said one studio owner in Howard County. Several studios have expanded beyond core strength and conditioning formats to include specialized small group offerings in mobility work and recovery-focused sessions.

Industry data suggests the small group training model has proven relatively resilient, with several studio owners noting stronger member retention rates compared to more traditional gym membership models. As the format continues to grow in popularity, several owners say they're already planning additional studio locations to meet demand across the state.
