Maryland High School Athletics Programs See Record Participation Numbers
State athletic officials report growing participation across a range of high school sports, with girls' programs seeing particularly strong growth.
Maryland high school athletics programs reported record overall participation numbers for the past academic year, according to figures released by the state's high school athletic governing body, with girls' sports programs showing particularly strong growth across multiple sport categories.
Athletic directors across several counties point to expanded coaching staff investment and renewed facility upgrades as contributing factors to the growth. Girls' flag football, added as an officially sanctioned sport in recent years, has seen especially rapid adoption, with dozens of schools fielding teams within just a few seasons of the sport's introduction.
"We're seeing kids try sports they might not have considered a few years ago, and the numbers show it," said one county athletic director. Traditional sports like soccer, cross country, and swimming also posted participation gains, reversing a modest decline seen in the years following the pandemic.
State officials say the participation growth has renewed conversations about facility capacity in some of the state's fastest-growing school districts, with several counties evaluating capital investments in athletic facilities to keep pace with rising demand across both boys' and girls' programs.
