Maryland Nail Salons Adapt to New Health and Safety Standards
Salon owners describe updated sanitation protocols and staff training as they respond to heightened customer expectations.
Nail salons across Maryland have adopted updated sanitation protocols and expanded staff training in recent years, responding to heightened customer expectations around hygiene that have become a defining factor in where clients choose to book appointments.
Salon owners describe a range of changes, from individually sealed tool kits for each client to more rigorous foot bath sanitation schedules between appointments. Several salons have invested in UV sterilization equipment and made a point of highlighting these investments in their marketing and in-salon signage.
"Clients want to see it, not just hear about it," said one salon owner in Montgomery County, describing a decision to move tool sterilization stations into clear view of the waiting area. State licensing boards have also updated continuing education requirements in recent years, with sanitation training now a more prominent component of license renewal.
Industry groups say the heightened standards have generally been well received by both salon owners and clients, even as some smaller operators note the added cost of more frequent equipment replacement and enhanced sanitation supplies. Customer loyalty, several owners say, has become closely tied to visible, consistent commitment to these standards.
