Southern Maryland County Officials Unveil Regional Broadband Expansion

Officials from Calvert, Charles, and St. Mary's counties jointly announced a coordinated broadband expansion initiative this week, aimed at closing remaining connectivity gaps in the region's more rural areas. The project combines state grant funding with private investment from regional internet providers.

The three-county partnership is designed to avoid duplicated infrastructure work and speed up permitting for new fiber lines that cross county lines. Officials estimate the expansion will reach several thousand additional households currently relying on slower satellite or fixed wireless connections.

"Broadband isn't a luxury anymore, it's basic infrastructure," said a Charles County commissioner at the joint announcement. "Families need it for school, work, and healthcare access." Local school districts have been vocal supporters of the initiative, citing ongoing challenges for students in unconnected households.

Construction on the first phase of new fiber lines is expected to begin later this year, with officials targeting substantial completion by the end of next year, pending permitting timelines and material availability.
